About

THE INITIATIVE

Our vision is to establish a private initiative that gives artists space and time to focus on their work while contributing to cultural exchange. We believe that Koroni can become a meaningful place for artistic practice and a point of connection between local and international art communities. By building a sustainable program that supports artists over time, we aim to contribute to the cultural landscape of Koroni and beyond. We look forward to welcoming artists from around the world to be part of this journey.

Agora (á¼€γορά) - The term “Agora” originates from ancient Greece, referring to the central meeting place of the city — where ideas, art, and people came together. The Agora Art Space embodies this spirit of openness and exchange, offering artists a place to work, live, and engage in dialogue across cultures.

The founders of AAS.jpeg

The costume and set designer, director and fine artist Reinhard von der Thannen has been influencing the European theatre world for more than 30 years with his imaginative and unusual sets. He studied “Stage, Costume and Film Design“ at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. His visually powerful creations always seduce the beautiful without, however, denying the sombre. He worked for the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Bayreuth Festival, the Burgtheater Vienna, the Grand Opéra, Palais Garnier Paris and a lot of other theatres and opera houses. He was often named „Costume Designer of the Year“ by the international magazine "Die Opernwelt" for his work, for example for Bayreuth's Lohengrin in 2011, which received worldwide acclaim and he staged Gounod's opera "Faust" in his own set with great success for the Großes Festspielhaus at the Salzburg Festival.

Many of his works were purchased by numerous collections, including the Berlin Museum, the Austrian Theatre Collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, the Salzburg University Collection and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Collection, and presented to the public in various exhibitions. From 2019 until 2021, Reinhard von der Thannen was a jury member of the important international competition for directing and stage design "RING AWARD“. From 2005 until 2023 he had a professorship for costume design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. Birgit von der Thannen studied English, American and French literature in Freiburg, Paris, Trier and Berlin. She has been working together with her husband as a conceptual advisor, dramaturgist and manager for more than 30 years. Birgit and Reinhard von der Thannen live between Berlin, Germany and the Peloponnese, Greece.
